Our 150 year old house

Our house was builded in 1861 as a double house made from slate fragments. It is a typical house of winegrowers on the moselle. The ca. 1 metre thick walls on the ground floor hold since then every high water. A lot of beautiful parts of the building are still preserved, for example our 150 year old tiles from Villeroy&Boch from their first year of tile production in the entrance of the winery.
The 250 year old vaulted cellar offers even today ideal conditions for the development of our easily digestible wines in big oak casks. Every generation made wine in the traditional way, but integrated new methods or relief with the help of machines. Since some years, we have a cooling system in our cellar to guide our wines during the fermentation.

Our daughter Silvia, who took in 2011 her winegrower master examination, brings as the next generation some new ideas in the winery. For our customers we have altered our courtyard into a modern “Vinothek”, in which our guests love to enjoy a glass of wine from the vineyards they have walked through after a
guided tour on the wine-learning-path. At the walk through Merl you will learn some stories of the history of our winegrowing village. A film about the work in our winery shows you the way of the wine throughout the year.
